Boxing basics:
Foundation checklist

Take this checklist with you before training, bag work or sparring.

Stance checklist

- Feet shoulder width apart
- Knees softened not bent
- Weight distributed 40% to 60% lead and rear foot respectively
- Obey the heel/toe principle - Lead toe point aligns with rear heel
- Chin tucked
- Elbows close to ribs

movement checklist

- Stay on balls of your feet
- The direction you move in is the foot that goes first. E.g If I move to the right my right foot goes first.
- Feet move equal distance, don’t bring them together
- No crossing feet

Good movement keeps you balanced and will make it difficult for your opponent to hit you whilst ensuring you’re ready to attack and defend at any time.

jab checklist

- Fully extend the arm when throwing
- Shoulder comes up to protect the chin
- Quarter turn of torso, shoulder and hip should be facing the direction of the punch
- Bring the lead hand straight back to guard
- Aim with the first two knuckles of your first
The jab is the most important punch in boxing. It sets everything up so make sure you practice it.

bonus tip: Jab and Move

- Throw the jab when the leading leg lands in any direction
- E.g if going backwards, the back leg goes first. The jab shots as that foot lands
Maintain offence whilst on the move

straight rear hand checklist

- Rotate the rear foot in the direction of your opponent
- Hips, torso and shoulders rotate together for maximum power
- Weight shifts to lead leg
- Chin stays tucked
- Fully extend the arm when throwing
- Keep your head above your feet, don’t lean into the punch
The power comes from the body, not just the arm.

lead hook checklist

- Keep it short and tight
- Elbow should should be at ear level
- Punch with the whole body, don’t loop the arm
- Twist front foot to aid hip rotation
- Weight shifts from lead leg to rear leg during punch
- Focus on pulling the rear should back
- Palm can face downwards or inwards
Think sharp and compact, not wide.

bonus tip: Idle hand

- The hand that's not throwing should be guarding. No exceptions.
- Keep the fist glued to the chin
- Make sure the elbow is covering the ribs
The hand is also perfectly placed to throw the next punch.

rear hook checklist

- Body mechanics are the same as with the straight right
- Rotate the rear foot and hips
- Only throw at close range
- Keep it tight
Do not over commit - Balance is key

lead uppercut checklist

- Weight is on the lead leg before the punch is thrown.
- Rotate the hips and shift the weight to rear leg
- Throw the punch up the centre line
- Lead elbow should be at eye level
Up the middle, not out wide.

rear uppercut checklist

- Push from the floor
- Same mechanics as the straight rear hand and rear hook
- Don’t loop the punch, keep it tight
- Rotate the back foot and through the hips
- Drive it forward not just up
- Comes up the middle
Delivered properly, this punch is devastating
